Explore Unusual Museums From Your London Hotels

While children can find walking among historical exhibits incredibly boring, adults are often happy to explore museums for hours at a time. Looking at 18th century vases and Ancient Egyptian serving spoons isn’t always the pot of tea. But, not all museums need to be like this, some of London’s backstreets are home to quirky museums, with exhibits that range from giant’s skeletons to pickled organs of soldiers. The objects in this museum are so macabre and bizarre that even children will be interested in them, this will possibly change all their perceptions about London's history.

There are people that collect fairly normal objects like stamps and pokemon, then there are those whose collections consist of 10,000 food wrappers and drinks cartons. This bizarre collection of old packets has now developed into a fully functioning museum. With exhibits that range from washing powder boxes to soft-drink cans of the 70s, The Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising is a novel way of looking at consumerism over the past century. As the museum is based in the affluent borough of Notting Hill, you’ll find that there are plenty of London hotels nearby.
Located close to the West End theatres of Covent Garden, Holborn has plenty of London hotels and these are well placed for visiting the Pollock’s Toy Museum. These toys are a far-cry from the Playstations and Nintendo consoles that today's children are used to. Many of the objects in the museum date from even before the Victorian era, a clay mouse modelled from Nile Clay is believed to be over 4,000 years old, while the world's oldest surviving Teddy bear dating from 1907 seems relatively young in comparison.
You can reach Forest Hill via London’s Overground service, and the direct trains from Waterloo mean that it can be easily reached from most central London hotels. You'll spot the entrance flanked up by an Alaskan totem pole, this is just a sneak preview of the diverse collection of objects that's yet to come, but which includes an over-stuffed walrus and sabre-toothed tiger.
