The Airport Hotel that’s not a Hotel

Airports are designed to look beautiful, to be soothing to harried travelers. Some brave souls push their luck with what they can get out of an airport though. You see them sprawled uncomfortably over multiple chairs overnight at any airport when there is a rash of weather-related delays. With its shops, services and entertainment opportunities these days, any airport worth its salt tries to offer the complete experience. It's when people actually try to get the complete experience promised that they realize how woefully inadequate it is. No airport experience can be complete until they provide you a place to get some reliable shuteye. In some locations like Miami international, an airport hotel right inside the airport concourse can be a full-blown affair. But most people looking for a place to rest in an airport aren't really looking for luxury. What they are looking for is a quiet bed. And in this area of the hotel industry there is plenty that's brewing. So far, if you are trying to find a place to lay down your head at an airport, resourcefulness (of the kind Tom Hanks shows in the movie Terminal) is your only ally - a little quiet cul-de-sac where you're left alone, the recliner at the spa. If you're willing to pay a little bit though, a little 7' x 9' 'room' at a one of the new pod hotels by Yotel in airports in places like London and Amsterdam will set you back about $40 for a four-hour stay. For the money, you get a nice bed, a bathroom attached, a flatscreen TV, WiFi and room service. In short, it's kind of luxurious and kind of affordable. The good news here is that they are looking to open plenty of pod hotels in the US. The idea is not lost on other corporations interested in expanding their hotel interests either. About a year old, Minute Suites is an airport hotel chain that's opened up in Atlanta international Airport. True to the name, they offer pricing for blocks of 15 minutes. Guests here get similar amenities as at the pod hotels, except that they need to go out to use the restroom. The reason they left the the bathroom out was, that once these amenities are provided, the law could call it a hotel. And then, there are extra taxes to pay. With these left out, Minute Suites is able to charge you more than $7.50 each quarter hour. They just don't want to call themselves an airport hotel even if they are one. At San Francisco international Airport and several other airports, there is the Unique Retreat chain of resting spaces. These are about two dozen private sleeping areas that charge something similar to what the Minute Suites do. There is a full-sized bed, a workstation, free Internet, television, and of course, no bathroom. The airport hotel that's not actually a hotel is all the rage in a business that's working hard to find new avenues for its falling revenues. With delays in flights only on the rise, this seems to be a great opportunity. For more information on airport hotel venues like these, trying Sleepinginairports.net. How Often Can You Trust Air Travel Deals Advertised on the Internet?

When USAir advertises fares at $100, but when they balloon to $300 when you try to take advantage of them because of the taxes and fees, does that count as advertising fraud? When at any miserable dive in America, they feel free to add on a resort fee to the advertised room rate, are they really allowed to do that? When in the papers they have air travel deals advertising flights to Europe starting at $129, should they be forced to make good on their promise? Travel articles that dispense advice on how to save money traveling, always tell you to sign up for e-mail alerts from all kinds of travel services for discounts and deals there might be on offer. The question is though, how do you know that those deals are real and not just teases? The language used in those offers are always about caveats like 'available for certain destinations' or 'offer subject to availability'. Jet Blue Cheeps are its offers put out on Twitter. They usually advertise a handful of seats, and announce the deadline. As time goes on, the available seats run out. But JetBlue offers are usually advertised for the number of seats available clearly shown. Most travel deals advertised will be available on certain dates alone. Where companies try to make it look like their deals are available for a longer time than they really are, that is where they cross the line. If those dates are listed at all, they'll usually be buried in fine print at the bottom of the page. If a company doesn't make it clear without sending you to the fine print section the dates on which a deal is available, youI should probably leave it alone. Consumer forums around the Internet are rife with complaints over how travel websites refuse to publish taxes and fees, and how they refuse to make it easy to find out the timeframe air travel deals are available in. They do this because it's cheap advertising for them this way. In general, offers on hotel stays, unlike air travel deals, are likely to be more worthwhile looking into. And that would be especially true of advertising done by a particular hotel as opposed to advertising done by a travel website for all hotels in the destination. Advertising by a travel website usually is less reliable than advertising by a specific airline, hotel or anything else. For instance, when a travel website advertises a car rental rate of $15 a day over a weekend, that usually doesn't include major destinations like LA or NYC. When a car rental agency like Hertzf makes such a claim, it usually includes every single major city. The only consolation here is that bait and switch ads are nothing new to us. We have had these on flyers and newspaper ads forever. It's just that e-mail and the Internet make it much easier for them to go back on their word. Exploring Asia Using Low-Cost-Carriers for Cheap Asia Airfare Ideas

Living around Vietnam as I did a few decades ago around 1995; while regional travel in the US has, for as long as anyone can remember, been all about little planes, small airstrips and more flight offerings than there ever were people for, short regional hops around Southeast Asia even as recently as 20 years ago, was all about buses, boats, and sometimes, the unexpected luxury of an inconveniently timed, exorbitantly expensive flight. If you wanted to go from Ho-chi-Minh city, the capital of Vietnam to Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, in a hurry for example, it always had to be a bus ride, and it always has to be hell: unless you wanted to shell out a week's pay on a plane ride. The bus on the other hand, would cost a reasonable $3 or so. All this has changed today - this crowded quarter of the world is served today by a vibrant low-cost airline industry that has sprung up seemingly overnight that has all but brought around-Asia airfare prices down to the around what those cross-country buses used to charge. They go by the affectionate term of LCC's - Low-Cost Carriers, and these are a busy network of dozens of airlines all around this overpopulated sector of the world that stretches from Israel in West Asia, all the way to Indonesia and Taiwan in the Far East. These airlines aren't known at this time for their ability to coordinate or time their schedules for the best effect; so if you want to travel over a long stretch, you just have the Internet at your disposal, to work out a plan hopping from one airline to another, to cobble together your own cheap Asia airfare for travel in the shortest time possible. Of course, there isn't much by way of luxury, just the way you would not expect anything like it on Ryanair or JetBlue. But for something like $40, you can usually cover a thousand miles quickly and painlessly. That cobbling together mentioned earlier, goes like this. First, flying around the Far East, you have to identify the airlines that are domestic only, like Nok Air in Thailand or Jeju Air in Korea, and tell them apart from the ones that do international trips only, like Viva Macau. And then there are the ones that do everything, like Air Asia of Malaysia that connects to Hong Kong and minor airports across Indonesia, and India. Finding your way around this mess is complicated by the fact that several of these Far East airlines don't have English websites - possibly, it'll make the tickets a penny cheaper, if they don't spend any on a translator. You always have Google Translator though. There are travel websites that keep track of all the airlines and reservation possibilities too, with names like FlyLowCostAirlines; if you think that these are just the kind of service Expedia or Orbitz are, you are in for a surprise. They don't let you look at times or airfares. They just give you the names of airlines that go between different places. If you look at their simple layout plan, you'd think it was all about just keying in a departure and arrival airport, and you get your low-cost Asia airfare right away. The problem is that there are new low-cost carriers coming in dropping out all the time, and existing ones keep changing their schedules. If you just want to muck about with the world, you can just pick a destination you can reach at $50 or $100, and try your luck what will your pleasure they? Perth, Australia on Tiger Air? Manila on Cebu Pacific? Follow your adventure. To actually go snap up your cheap Asia airfare, you'll have to try a website like Momondo or SkyScanner, to give you everything you need to actually buy. The regular travel websites don't usually do low-cost carriers. You'll have to go to a specialist like one of these. You'll pay for that low-cost fare, by making do without some extras. But who says that they are free even on the regular carriers? Business Class Flights to Central America

After years of traveling in coach, I recently discovered the pleasures of traveling business class flights to Central America. For much of my adult life, and being a family man, I always thought of business class flights or first class flights as being beyond my means. Most seats in the front of the plane usually cost quite a bit more, sometimes double, what a coach seat can sell for. Since I was not travelling constantly and did not have a company to pick up the tab, I never even looked at business class flights as an option. A few years ago I began a real estate financing business in Costa Rica and one of my partners was a Delta captain so he would provide me with “buddy” passes. These are standby tickets and I would only have to pay for the taxes usually. These were great if you did not mind waiting on standby or if you were traveling off-season. The best perk was being able to automatically upgrade to first class or business class flights if there was availability. I gradually got used to flying in the front of the plane and I was, of course, pleased with the great level of service, food and drinks. The best part of all, for me personally since I am a person of large physical stature, is that the seats are very comfortable and quite large. Eventually however, the “buddy” passes became harder to get and I was left with the dilemma that I was so accustomed to being pampered but could no longer afford to fly in that manner. I became frustrated when I had to go back to coach. I felt like the workers on the Titanic, having to face the crowded conditions in Steerage Class. One day though, I discovered that with a little patience and careful planning, you can find online business class flights for considerably lower prices. On Continental.com I was able to pick up several business class flights for only a couple of hundred dollars more than the cost of a coach seat. This was amazing and now I am much more careful when booking flights. The perks in business class flights are extensive and include unlimited alcoholic beverages and much better food. The attendants will bring you little hot towels to wipe your hands and face before and after meals. Instead of having to watch a TV screen that drops down five rows from your seat, you watch a larger screen installed in the back of the seat in front of you. Headsets are free whereas in coach they charge you two dollars. The leather seats are super comfortable and much larger, and the attendants bring you soft pillows and blankets for longer evening business class flights. All in all, the experience is well worth the extra money, but as I mentioned, you can definitely find some bargains if you shop around online. Snagging The Best Seats on Any Airline Flight

It used to be that all you needed to do to get a good seat on an airplane would be to show up at the airport an extra 15 minutes in advance; now in an age of absolute air travel commodification, scoring a great seat is becoming quite a feat - complete with requirements in deviousness and talent if you need to get anywhere. Airlines are running their flights packed closer to full capacity more often than ever before. This past month in June, Delta had the busiest month of the season, and North West sold out about 90% of all its seats. And every one of those people on those flights would rather have had an emergency exit seatsfor better legroom or an aisle seat for more freedom. But since there are possible seats to covet too if you know where to look. A 737 airliner for example, is somewhat ovoid in shape - it bulges out in the center along its length; and the window seats on the rows that famm at the center, lengthwise, of the plane, have the most shoulder room. More and more, people buying seats on an airline flight appear to prefer the airlines' own booking sites, or booking websites like Priceline.com that will offer them the facility of putting down dibs on a seat in advance. And ever since the airlines began to notice that there was real value that passengers attached to certain kinds of seats, they've begun to charge for them; and not a day too soon to some passengers, who really would like those special seats, no matter what. Northwest for instance, has been charging $15 for some of its coach seats with certain advantageous qualities. Southwest doesn't assign seats; you just have the option to check in 24 hours ahead of your trip, and you'll be called in to board the flight if you are among the first 40 or 50 passengers to have logged in online. And if you don't have the time to do this on your own, you can pay boardfirst.com a $5 fee to do it for you. To most people taking an airline flight is hard enough on their poor nerves without having to be jammed into a middle seat or one that won't recline. If there's a way, they'll pay. The trouble is, there are dozens of different kinds of airliner out there, and each airline company will configure each model of plane differently. And there are different policies they use to number seats and assign them. Most airlines for instance will give out exit row seats only to their frequent flyers; and JetBlue offers them to every passenger right after they buy their ticket. You can't learn a rule or two and find your way around the system; each airline has its own. But still, if you are fanatical enough about scoring the best seat on an airline flight, there are a few things you can do. With the exception of a few holdouts like Southwest, most airlines will absolutely allow you to select a seat when you buy a ticket. They give you a diagram of the whole plane with pictures of seats that are empty at the moment; you can look up seat information on SeatExpert.com, find out which the best seats are for the most leg room and reclining pitch, and put your name down when you buy. If you are looking for an exit row seat on certain flights for instance, seat expert will helpfully remind you that it can get really drafty (funny, isn't it - considering that flight cabins are hermetically sealed) and you can avoid it if you will want to. Major travel booking websites like Expedia and Orbitz allow you to pick your seat as soon as you get started with the purchase process; but it will only work if you buy a ticket before the airline flight in question is somewhat full. Airlines will only allow advance seat reservations until the plane is half-full to maintain a bit of seating flexibility when they need it. But all the foresight in the world won't really help in certain cases; sometimes, an airline will switch airplane models for a specific airline flight, for reasons like delays and interruptions from maintenance schedules. You may have to actually check back even after you make your seat selection, to make sure that they haven't decided to sign you up to a game of musical chairs. That's not your only reason to keep looking in either. Seats can open up all of a sudden after you make your booking. This can happen when a frequent flyer in coach gets a free upgrade, and frees up his original assigned seat. The best travel experts know when exactly each airline decides on its upgrades - some airlines do it exactly 24 hours before a departure, and others do it three days before. United, Northwest and Continental have their Economy Plus section with extra legroom on the front of the plane, but you can only get them if you are one of their frequent flyers; and sometimes, you'll suddenly find that an airline flight has a much larger plane like a jumbo jet, pressed into service on your route - all without warning. When that happens, you know that all the business class seats are open to coach fares. You get them if you are a frequent flyer. Make sure that you ask the person manning the counter right before you board a flight; everything is all in flux and up for grabs. It isn't over until it is over.
