The Best Beach Vacations in Costa Rica

Some of the very best beach vacations in the world can be found in nearby, U.S. friendly Costa Rica. There are several things you should consider while planning your trip however. The first thing is to make sure that your passport is in order. Although Costa Rica has a long standing tradition of being friendly with the U.S. and its citizens, the authorities there still require that all U.S. travelers carry their VALID passport with them at all times. This means that you need the actual passport, not a photocopy. I know of many incidents where travelers were stopped by the police and only had a copy of their passport with them and were made to go back to their hotels and get the document while the officers waited outside. Guanacaste in the north of Costa Rica just south of neighboring Nicaragua has some great spots for the best beach vacations. For couples who want a relaxing getaway without too many tourists or surfers my recommendation is Playa Hermosa. It is easy to get to and several of the major airlines including Continental and Delta fly regular flights to nearby Liberia Airport (LIR) which is only twenty minutes away. Playa Hermosa is very scenic and the rugged mountains surround the beach itself which is very large and clean. Palm trees and little restaurants with their colorful ranchos and palapas line the beachfront and you can cozy up and get a fresh ceviche or any manner of fish or other tasty dish. Most of the restaurants can make you a nice frozen margarita or daiquiri, and of course, cold beer (Imperial) will go very well on those hot days. The water in Playa Hermosa is very calm and there are no big surf areas so that keeps the surfer crowd out for the most part. This means that you can relax and walk out into the calm, clear, warm waters and actually see the fish swimming at your feet. From Playa Hermosa it is only an hour and a half drive to nearby Tamarindo, which has more nightlife and a lot more surfers and tourists. Going there will serve to upgrade your trip into one of the best beach vacations you ever had because Tamarindo has great restaurants and nightclubs. One tip: never leave a bag or anything of value inside your car when you go out. No doubt about it, the item of value will be long gone when you get back. With a little foresight and planning, your journey to Costa Rica could result in the very best beach vacation you ever had and you will definitely want to come back again and again. I Couldn’t Have Asked More of my Sailing Holidays

When my girlfriend proposed that we take a sailing vacation together, I was not thrilled about the idea. We are as different as night and day in many respects. We do not have the same ideas about romantic places at all. For her, the best place to get away from it all is in the middle of the wilderness. My idea of a romantic place, however, is Manhattan. We balance each other out pretty well, but it makes things difficult when we have to decide on vacations. Usually, we take turns, but this time I wasn't sure if I could abide by her decision. You see, sailing holidays scared the pants off me. Although everyone in the pictures from her sailing holiday pamphlet appeared to be having a good time, all I could think about was that they were just awaiting their inevitable death beneath the waves. I knew that the Greek sailing holidays company that she was considering had a pretty good safety record (I researched them at length) but even still, I could not get over my fear of not having land beneath my feet. I had never been on a sail boat trip before – even a small one. What would happen if I found out that being aboard a ship made me sea sick? Were the people who spent their entire sailing holidays throwing up over the edge of the ship? Would I be the first? In the end, however, I had to give in. After all, I was planning a trip to London the next year. I knew that if I vetoed her decision, she would veto mine. Before we knew it, we would give up vacations entirely. I didn't want things to get to that point. Getting on the boat, I was practically shaking. She had to hold my hand! Within a couple hours of starting the trip, however, something strange happened: I calmed down. I actually had a great time aboard the sailboat. There were many interesting people there to talk to, and there's something very soothing about the endless rocking of the waves. We didn't have any bad weather the whole time. If anything, it was a bit too mild. That made for days of gentle sailing and nights of calm, restful sleep. All in all, I couldn't have asked more of my sailing holidays. If she enjoys London half as much, we'll have a lovely trip next summer. The sound of the name Guatemala creates a holiday mood in many a mind as is synonym with many Spanish countries that are associated with terrific holidays. This south American country leaves little to the imagination and judging from her neighbors who happen to be Mexico, Belize, the Caribbean and the pacific ocean, the fun is with no doubt out of this world. Guatemala holidays are rich with many attractions waiting to be unveiled by her visitors. The Pacific Ocean provides a romantic welcome to this beautiful land and you will enjoy a cruise in the ocean. Seasonal festivals characterize Guatemala holidays and you will definitely enjoy indulging in them. They use the marimba for most of their music though other instruments such as drums and the chirima are also used to churn out lovely Guatemala tunes. Other attractions that will make Guatemala holidays worthwhile include the huge stone monuments that were erected by the Mayans. These monuments are still there to date after all these years in form of palaces, temples and pyramids and they provide an interesting sightseeing. Guatemala is also a land of beautiful dense forests that make those nature drives and walks all exciting as you sample its lovely flora and fauna. The Guatemala archeology stands out among the Central American countries and this coupled with amusing activities make Guatemala holidays the most sought. Great Sightseeing and Adventure Tours in Alaska

One of the goals on my "bucket list" is to visit all 50 states at some point. I've covered a bunch of them already, and have been eyeing the Last Frontier for my next journey. I've heard about a lot about all the different sightseeing tours in Alaska that are available to travelers, so right now I'm trying to sift through some information to decide which package would be best for me. Part of my problem is I'm not really sure what I want to do yet. Our 49th state just has so many amazing activities to offer visitors that it's hard to narrow down the choices and settle on a few fun things that would fit into my itinerary. I'll probably only go for a week at the most, so I definitely have to limit my outings. Many tours in Alaska require more than a week because they have to cover such vast distances, but I won't have that much time at my disposal. I know that whale watching tours in Alaska are very popular, and this is something that's a must for my trip. I've never seen any whales except for one or two in captivity at places like Sea World and city aquariums. Seeing these majestic creatures in the wild, where they have the freedom to swim, romp, and roam wherever they want, would be simply awesome! I certainly don't want to miss out on something like this. Glacier cruises go hand-in-hand with whale watching tours in Alaska. No one can go that close to Prince William Sound without venturing out on the water for a closer view of the massive glaciers in the area. I've heard of the breathtaking beauty of these glaciers and have seen pictures on the Internet, but I'm sure nothing can compare to seeing the structures in person. There are tours in Alaska that involve more active pursuits than simply taking in some beautiful sights. For example, I can go hiking in world-famous Denali National Park, where I can push myself to the brink physically and perhaps meet some wildlife along the way. I've heard this kind of adventure can be a somewhat dangerous proposition, however, so I'll have to make sure I'm properly geared up before even attempting such a thing. Besides Denali, I might also want to check out the Kenai Fjords for more waterfalls, glaciers, and stunning vistas, or go fishing or kayaking somewhere inland. Really, there seems to be no shortage of things to do on the trip. After reading through some info about tours in Alaska, I'm not any closer to making a final decision. There are so many wonderful possibilities that it would be a shame to leave out any adventures. Maybe the only answer is to try to wrangle another week off from work so I can fit everything in! Looking for Affordable Food the Next Time You Tour London?

Anyone who ventures to tour London, has to be prepared to feel practically robbed. To begin with, any Tube ride no matter how short, can wind you up 4 pounds poorer. And if you thought you could make up for it by picking a really simple modest meal at a back lane restaurants, your bill is likely to end up looking like something from L.A - only, the pound is worth about twice what the dollar is. London is unbelievably expensive; but you wouldn't know it to look at it. Everywhere you go, tourists from every part of the world, and the locals too go at it, eating, drinking and getting entertained like they thought things were going at fire sale prices. But there are certain ways of keeping your costs down and to a budget when you tour London. It could be quite an adventure in itself tuning in to the right kind of word-of-mouth. How meaningful would it it be to tour London without a real taste of authentic Britain? This is actually possible on a budget - at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese - a dark labyrinthine set of bars and dining tables on Fleet Street, set in ancient building from five centuries ago. They say that this was a favorite of Samuel Johnson's (he ate in the Chop Room out front). You know who Samuel Johnson is don't you? He was the first lexicographer in English - creator of our first dictionary. It's pretty cheap here - a poached salmon salad will cost you about 8 pounds, a big old serving of french fries and fried battered fish and peas go for the same; the excellent treacle pudding, served with custard, goes for 5 pounds, and the stellar ale, you could get for less than 2 pounds for half a pint. It's all really quite old world, and you'll feel right at home. Some of the guests at the tables look like they could probably afford to spend ten times this on a meal; but there's something about the atmosphere and the prices that no one can pass up a chance to sample. Chinese is pretty new to London; somehow, it's taken it a while for it to take hold here unlike in North America. But now that it's taken hold, the cooking is often so great, you wonder what took them so long. Consider dropping by at the Bar Shu on Frith Street in Soho. It's so good here, the reviewers keep going there, and repeating themselves in the magazines they write for. Certainly, some of the items on the menu seem to forget that they are supposed to be on an affordable menu; but if you stay away from the newfangled stuff, all the classic recipes are excellent value. For about 9 pounds, try the dementingly delicious green beans and minced pork - it's great, it's spicy, and it's only tolerably hot. But if you want something intolerably hot, try the hot dried beef with Chinese pepper. It'll have you reaching for your ale, trying to bring a little life back to your poor overwhelmed tongue. If you would like wine to go with it, it goes for about 5 pounds of glass. This restaurant certainly adds a little spice when you come tour London. Over by Notting Hill, you'll come by a cheerful restaurant called Alounak; it's authentic, and it's reasonably priced. The portions are generous too; the chicken with berries, saffron and rice is an excellent value at 8 pounds. Or try the lamb kebab for 12 pounds. The authentic coconut and cardamom dessert, Faludeh, at 3 pounds, is spectacular. There are usually lots of Iranians at the tables; that's a pretty sure sign that the food is the authentic taste. But how about the Spanish Tendido Cero at Old Brompton Road in South Kensington? It lives up to its Spanish name with all the liveliness and music; the anchovies and olive oil go for 5 pounds, the Spanish cheeses go for 7 pounds, and the delicious (if you are not squeamish) exotic black pig goes for 15 pounds. It's all terribly friendly. And it's a sure sign the food will tast great. Travel to Caribbean Countries and Beautiful Beaches

There are several great ways to travel to Caribbean islands and one of the best ways is to book a long Caribbean cruise. You can book your travel to Caribbean ports with one of the top cruise lines online and save even more money. www.travelzoo.com has a great promotion that they send out weekly to their email subscribers. It is called “’This Week’s Top 20 for Travelzoo VIPs” and you need to go on their site and sign up for it. A typical special would be something like “$379 -- Bermuda: Cruise 7 Nights This Spring w/$50 Credit” or “$1149 -- 2-Week Panama Canal Cruise incl. $150 Credit & Air”. These and other fantastic special deals get sent directly to your email each week. One of the best cruise lines you can take to travel to Caribbean island destinations is Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (www.royalcaribbean.com) but there are lots of cruise ship companies and some that are not as famous may be better values. You can get a lot more for your money if you travel to Caribbean destinations with a lesser known cruise line. Once on the cruise ship you will be able to do most anything you would dream of doing at a land locked resort. There are different restaurants and buffets available at all hours and all the food you can eat is included in your cruise ticket. Most of these buffets are incredible with great food including lobster, shrimp and seafood prepared by some of the best chefs in the business. There are many different ports of call when you travel to Caribbean countries via cruise ships. Some of the most popular are Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic), San Juan (Puerto Rico), St. John’s (Virgin Islands), St. Thomas (Virgin Islands), and Kingston (Jamaica). When you finally arrive you will either have signed up for a land tour with the ship or you can go off on your own, find your own taxi or rent-a-car and explore to your heart’s content. The only rule is that you have to be back at the ship at a certain hour or else you get left behind and that can cost you an arm and a leg. St. Thomas has some great shops near the pier where all the cruise ships berth and you can walk around and shop ‘til you drop. If you like rum, this is truly a paradise for you and you will find hundreds of rare bottles of rum including Rhum Babancourt and St. James Extra Old. You can pick up as many bottles as you want and not pay duty on them. This really makes them much more affordable and tempting to purchase. You can also get authentic Cuban cigars in St. Thomas as well as beautiful arts and crafts from the local artisans. If you want to relax you can take a cab to a local beach and lay out and get a suntan. One of the best parts of travel to Caribbean ports of call is that they each have their own distinct character and unbelievable beaches. All in all, a Caribbean cruise is a terrific and affordable way for families to explore travel to Caribbean countries and exotic beaches. Where to Getting Good Vacation Rates

Many people are struggling to pay for vacations that they use to take for granted. If you want to get away from it all at least once a year, you have to find ways to save money on your vacation. You can shorten your time away to save, but that is not much fun. You can also go places of less interest because they are cheaper, but if you are not excited, you may as well just stay home. Instead, think about when you can get the best vacation rates for the places you do want to go, and then plan your vacation around that. When it comes to finding vacation rates, there area few things that come into play more than others. Time of year is a big one. For example, if you want to go skiing, you only have so much time during the year when you can do this. That you already know. If you go during peak skiing time, your vacation rates are going to be the highest for that particular resort or area. However, if you go at the very beginning or the very end of the season, your vacation rates will be lower, allowing you to still do what you love to do for less money. When it comes to tropical areas, you know they are warm and welcoming all throughout the year, except when a hurricane may come rolling through. This is when vacation rates really come into play. For this type of vacation, the time of year is not about when you can do what you want there, as you can do anything all year long, it is more about when most people decide to vacation in that area. You want to go when that area has a down time each year. That is when less people are going. They offer better deals to get vacationers to come their way. Ask about off season or off peak time when making inquiries. If an area has suffered from some type of natural disaster, you may not think of that area as the best place to vacation. However, when they are getting back on their feet, you can get some of the best vacation rates going. It just depends on what you want to do. Keep in mind that not everything is going to be accessible, but if you can find some things that you are going to love to do, you can get a great deal on such an area. You are going to have an amazing time for a good price while contributing some much needed tourist dollars to an area that badly needs them. The oil spill has caused quite a problem in the Gulf of Mexico. Many businesses that rely on vacationers are suffering and going out of business. For the most part, the only thing that you won't be able to do is to go out onto or into the water. You can still find some beaches for sunbathing as long as you don't mind that you may not be able to swim. The night life and all other activities are still there and waiting for you. You can get amazing vacation rates to go to that area right now, and you won't regret it. People are Opting for Cheap Vacations

With the economy in shambles, vacation plans are changing by the second. The lazy and carefree extended beach trips are being threatened. Family trips on cruise lines or to amusement parks are being cancelled left and right. Instead of splurging on the more luxurious vacations, people are opting for cheap vacations. However, before you rule out any sort of fun whatsoever for the upcoming allotted family time, there are some cheap vacations that aren’t just easy on your wallet, but are excellent ways to bond with your family as well. When people think of cheap vacations, they tend to think about the fact that it means not being able to order room service or having endless amounts of drinks delivered poolside. Sure, you may not be able to live like royalty during this time of economic struggle, but you can certainly take advantage of lots of other ways to spend time with your friends and family. Cheap vacations can consist of simply camping out at a local campground, just to get away from home. For those with small children and who love the great outdoors, doing exactly that may be acceptable. There is a lot to be said for setting up a tent and spending time in nature – fishing, hiking and sitting around a campfire each evening. For those who prefer to not spend time with the pesky insects that come along with the outdoorsy types of cheap vacations, spend some time figuring out exactly what you want to do. When you have a specific plan, it is quite a bit easier to figure out where, when and exactly how much you need to spend. The key to finding cheap vacations is being flexible. When you’re willing to compromise and exercise flexibility, you may be pleasantly surprised as to what you’re able to accomplish. If you’re determined to spend time away from home and it will require overnight accommodations, adjust your time away to only be weekday stays. Starting your getaway on a Sunday night and leaving on a Friday morning can save you several hundred dollars as you’ll be avoiding the most popular and most expensive weekend nights. Weekend nights are notorious for sometimes costing double or triple the rates during peak tourist seasons. This theory of simply traveling during the week also holds true for airfare. Spend some time talking to the airlines to see what the best deals happen to be. A lot of times, if you leave on a weekday, the rates will be more reasonable. When planning cheap vacations, you may find that cutting out the middle man is more cost effective. While a lot of people like to utilize travel agents, the fact is, you can end up paying more than you’d like for their services. Take some time to do your own research and make your own phone calls. Sometimes, it’s the best way to find the best deals. By being flexible, you could find that this year’s vacation could cost a lot less than last year’s vacation. By cutting out some of the luxuries, such as room service, you will find that there is a lot more money in your wallet at the end of any getaways that you make take. By simply taking some time to put things into perspective, you may find that cheap vacations are even more rewarding than you would have ever imagined them to be.
