Weekend Travel Deals

If you want to get away for the weekend, you probably don't want to spend a ton of money on a spur of the moment mental health break. There are plenty of ways that you can get away without dipping into what you may want to spend for a longer vacation later in the year. There are plenty of great deals out there and plenty to do if you just need to have a few days away to recharge your batteries and to clear your mind. Sometimes, weekend travel deals are too good to pass up. Go ahead and get away without going into debt. Some people like to find a few weekend travel deals each year instead of going away for a week or two at a time. Some people never take a vacation but realize that a few days away here and there is what is going to keep them sane when life is out of control. There are many things that we tend to do that help keep us on an even keel, but some of those things can be destructive. Instead of giving in to those things, take a few days to totally disappear with someone you care about or go alone, and allow yourself to refresh your outlook. Weekends away are great for this. How you want to go about finding your weekend travel deals is up to you. One way would be to think about where you want to go, how much you want to spend, and what you want to do. That is not so easy, but if you have an idea, that makes booking your weekend away a whole lot easier. Simple find out how you have to get there and the find a hotel that works for you. Weekend hotel rooms tend to be more expensive, but that is not a huge deal if you are only staying for a day or two. Look for deals online. Remember that going somewhere for the weekend means a shorter trip. Going somewhere that requires you to be on a plane for six hours is not going to give you much time to relax. Add to that the time spent at the airport both ways, you have less than a day to really enjoy yourself. Look for weekend travel deals that include short flights or short drives. Remember, just a few hours away is enough to make you feel like you are far away from the problems and stresses of your life. Take a three or even four day weekend if you want to go further away. Spur of the moment weekend trips are the most common type out there, which means you do not have a lot of time to make arrangements when you decide that you want to get away. The answer to your problem of little time but the need to get away would be to find travel agents or online vacation brokers that have weekend travel deals all ready to go. You can find them almost anywhere with everything taken care of for you. All you have to do is wait to hear your arrangements are confirmed, pay for your trip, and then pack. It's easier than ever to get away when you need it the most. Find Discount Airline Tickets Online

I'll be the first one to admit that I'm a travel junkie. I love visiting new places, seeing new sights, tasting new foods, and experiencing new cultures. I try to take anywhere from two to three international vacations per year just to satisfy the travel bug. Obviously this is a pretty expensive hobby, and since I don't pull down a huge salary or anything, I have to be very budget-conscious when I make my reservations. Fortunately, I'm usually able to purchase discount airline tickets, which saves me a good chunk of change whenever I go on another adventure. You'd think that with as many trips as I've taken, I'd have some secret formula to getting discount airline tickets to any destination in the world. Oh, how I wish that were true! Instead, all the deals I find are due more to hard work and perseverance than any inside information. But on the bright side, that means anyone can take advantage of these tips to secure discount airline tickets for their next vacation. The first thing I do is hit all the usual travel websites to see what kinds of deals are currently available. Travelocity and Expedia are musts, and Priceline is an occasional option as well. To be honest, though, I have never found any earth-shattering deals from these places. Yes, they do offer discount airline tickets, but we're talking maybe 5 to 10 percent off. If you're expecting to get bigger discounts than that, you're going to have to do more digging. My second stop is usually various online travel agencies. Sometimes these places have package deals that include not only discount airline tickets, but also accommodations and a rental car (if desired). Travel agencies are often able to provide better discounts than the websites I mentioned, especially if the prices are based on a certain number of travelers. So on the one hand, you won't be able to take your holiday unless all the packages sell out; but on the other, you'll enjoy significant savings if things work out. And finally, don't forget to check in with the airlines themselves. Sometimes the best way to get discount airline tickets is to book them directly. Many airlines release seats at different prices on different days of the week, so if you decide to go this route, it would be a good idea to check several times over the course of a few days prior to making reservations. I'm not an expert traveler or anything like that, so I'm not saying that these methods are the very best ways to save on airfare. But I always manage to find discount airline tickets online using these simple techniques, so I'll continue doing things this way. I can't wait to score cheap seats for my next exotic vacation! Business Class Flights to Central America

After years of traveling in coach, I recently discovered the pleasures of traveling business class flights to Central America. For much of my adult life, and being a family man, I always thought of business class flights or first class flights as being beyond my means. Most seats in the front of the plane usually cost quite a bit more, sometimes double, what a coach seat can sell for. Since I was not travelling constantly and did not have a company to pick up the tab, I never even looked at business class flights as an option. A few years ago I began a real estate financing business in Costa Rica and one of my partners was a Delta captain so he would provide me with “buddy” passes. These are standby tickets and I would only have to pay for the taxes usually. These were great if you did not mind waiting on standby or if you were traveling off-season. The best perk was being able to automatically upgrade to first class or business class flights if there was availability. I gradually got used to flying in the front of the plane and I was, of course, pleased with the great level of service, food and drinks. The best part of all, for me personally since I am a person of large physical stature, is that the seats are very comfortable and quite large. Eventually however, the “buddy” passes became harder to get and I was left with the dilemma that I was so accustomed to being pampered but could no longer afford to fly in that manner. I became frustrated when I had to go back to coach. I felt like the workers on the Titanic, having to face the crowded conditions in Steerage Class. One day though, I discovered that with a little patience and careful planning, you can find online business class flights for considerably lower prices. On Continental.com I was able to pick up several business class flights for only a couple of hundred dollars more than the cost of a coach seat. This was amazing and now I am much more careful when booking flights. The perks in business class flights are extensive and include unlimited alcoholic beverages and much better food. The attendants will bring you little hot towels to wipe your hands and face before and after meals. Instead of having to watch a TV screen that drops down five rows from your seat, you watch a larger screen installed in the back of the seat in front of you. Headsets are free whereas in coach they charge you two dollars. The leather seats are super comfortable and much larger, and the attendants bring you soft pillows and blankets for longer evening business class flights. All in all, the experience is well worth the extra money, but as I mentioned, you can definitely find some bargains if you shop around online. Snagging The Best Seats on Any Airline Flight

It used to be that all you needed to do to get a good seat on an airplane would be to show up at the airport an extra 15 minutes in advance; now in an age of absolute air travel commodification, scoring a great seat is becoming quite a feat - complete with requirements in deviousness and talent if you need to get anywhere. Airlines are running their flights packed closer to full capacity more often than ever before. This past month in June, Delta had the busiest month of the season, and North West sold out about 90% of all its seats. And every one of those people on those flights would rather have had an emergency exit seatsfor better legroom or an aisle seat for more freedom. But since there are possible seats to covet too if you know where to look. A 737 airliner for example, is somewhat ovoid in shape - it bulges out in the center along its length; and the window seats on the rows that famm at the center, lengthwise, of the plane, have the most shoulder room. More and more, people buying seats on an airline flight appear to prefer the airlines' own booking sites, or booking websites like Priceline.com that will offer them the facility of putting down dibs on a seat in advance. And ever since the airlines began to notice that there was real value that passengers attached to certain kinds of seats, they've begun to charge for them; and not a day too soon to some passengers, who really would like those special seats, no matter what. Northwest for instance, has been charging $15 for some of its coach seats with certain advantageous qualities. Southwest doesn't assign seats; you just have the option to check in 24 hours ahead of your trip, and you'll be called in to board the flight if you are among the first 40 or 50 passengers to have logged in online. And if you don't have the time to do this on your own, you can pay boardfirst.com a $5 fee to do it for you. To most people taking an airline flight is hard enough on their poor nerves without having to be jammed into a middle seat or one that won't recline. If there's a way, they'll pay. The trouble is, there are dozens of different kinds of airliner out there, and each airline company will configure each model of plane differently. And there are different policies they use to number seats and assign them. Most airlines for instance will give out exit row seats only to their frequent flyers; and JetBlue offers them to every passenger right after they buy their ticket. You can't learn a rule or two and find your way around the system; each airline has its own. But still, if you are fanatical enough about scoring the best seat on an airline flight, there are a few things you can do. With the exception of a few holdouts like Southwest, most airlines will absolutely allow you to select a seat when you buy a ticket. They give you a diagram of the whole plane with pictures of seats that are empty at the moment; you can look up seat information on SeatExpert.com, find out which the best seats are for the most leg room and reclining pitch, and put your name down when you buy. If you are looking for an exit row seat on certain flights for instance, seat expert will helpfully remind you that it can get really drafty (funny, isn't it - considering that flight cabins are hermetically sealed) and you can avoid it if you will want to. Major travel booking websites like Expedia and Orbitz allow you to pick your seat as soon as you get started with the purchase process; but it will only work if you buy a ticket before the airline flight in question is somewhat full. Airlines will only allow advance seat reservations until the plane is half-full to maintain a bit of seating flexibility when they need it. But all the foresight in the world won't really help in certain cases; sometimes, an airline will switch airplane models for a specific airline flight, for reasons like delays and interruptions from maintenance schedules. You may have to actually check back even after you make your seat selection, to make sure that they haven't decided to sign you up to a game of musical chairs. That's not your only reason to keep looking in either. Seats can open up all of a sudden after you make your booking. This can happen when a frequent flyer in coach gets a free upgrade, and frees up his original assigned seat. The best travel experts know when exactly each airline decides on its upgrades - some airlines do it exactly 24 hours before a departure, and others do it three days before. United, Northwest and Continental have their Economy Plus section with extra legroom on the front of the plane, but you can only get them if you are one of their frequent flyers; and sometimes, you'll suddenly find that an airline flight has a much larger plane like a jumbo jet, pressed into service on your route - all without warning. When that happens, you know that all the business class seats are open to coach fares. You get them if you are a frequent flyer. Make sure that you ask the person manning the counter right before you board a flight; everything is all in flux and up for grabs. It isn't over until it is over. The Economy Travel Mindset Can Save The Day

Economy travel is the way to go for your 2010 travel plans: Here's how... During the 90's , the economy was booming, jobs were plentiful and most of us weren't paying strict attention to what we spent on our vacation plans. Today, of course, is a different story. Now the situation has reversed to the point where many of us are saying, “What vacation?” Fortunately, the economy travel mindset can save the day. Yes, you can still have a great vacation if you know how to plan your travel with just a few tricks of the trade. Here, we've got some pointers on how to travel economically and in style. Your first step consists of doing a little research online. Just as you're keeping a close eye on your wallet, hotels and restaurants are hungry for your business. This means prices are coming down. Even the airlines are offering some great deals, particularly if you book well in advance. The big-name, one-stop shopping travel sites can be a convenient way to put together an economy travel package. It's certainly worth checking them out for their best price deal to your destination. However, here's a little known travel secret: the “independent” traveler who puts together his own itinerary can share hundreds of dollars in travel costs with just a little extra effort. Here's how this strategy works. If you're traveling by air, Google 'cheap airfares your-destination'. This allows you to zero in on sites that specialize in travel to your region of interest. You'll find that such sites often have listings at drop-dead prices which just may beat the prices quoted at the big-name sites. Sign up for a subscription to their free newsletters to get their latest finds delivered right to your in-box. If you're traveling by car, consider renting a vehicle that gets great mileage – the saving on gas may outweigh the cost of the rental if your own car is a gas guzzler. For accommodations, check out some of the exclusively hotel-oriented sites, which provide photos and contact information for hundreds of hotels in your destination area. Not only will you find unusual, boutique type accommodations not listed on the big-name sites, but when you call and book direct, you'll save a substantial amount of money. Use the same economy travel strategy to locate restaurants before you leave home. Use a search string such as 'Italian restaurants your-destination' (or whatever cuisine strikes your fancy). These restaurant directories include reviews from other travelers which help you find the great restaurants suited to your taste. Think of the types of activities you'll want to include in your vacation plan. Whether you're looking for walking tours, museums, theater, shopping or nature walks, you'll find resources online. This aspect of the economy travel plan saves both time and money, because you'll have dates and times as well as prices (sometimes at discounted prices) on hand before you ever leave home. Although it requires a bit of your time organizing your own itinerary with this travel strategy, you'll have fun doing it and you'll save a lot of money. You'll have a customized vacation plan you know you'll enjoy, with maximum value. Economy travel makes good sense. Bon voyage! Airline Travel Tips to Costa Rica

There are several ways to get to Costa Rica and you need to know a few things before you start out. First things first, you need to get your passport in order. This sounds rudimentary and not worth mentioning but you would be surprised how many people that I know personally that have planned and paid for their trip to Costa Rica and show up at the airport without a passport. Airline travel to Costa Rica and most other foreign countries by U.S. residents requires that the traveler hold a valid passport. You can get a passport at any U.S. Post Office in about three to six weeks. If you need it faster there are agencies that you can go to that will process it in as little as two days, but it will cost considerably more. When contemplating airline travel to Costa Rica, it will depend on what airport you are leaving from. Delta flies the most planes there but you need to fly to the Atlanta airport and I personally dislike this place. It is so big you have to take a little subway train from one terminal to the other. It is noisy and unless you have a pass to the Admiralty Club, you will find yourself waiting many hours on hard plastic chairs surrounded by screaming infants and self important yahoos trying to impress you by talking as loud as they can into their cell phones about giant business deals they are supposedly putting together. So if you live on the West Coast, you may want to consider Continental Airlines. They also do not travel direct to Costa Rica, but their pit stop is at Houston International Airport, which is not only closer (three hours from the West Coast as opposed to six and a half hours to Atlanta) but also, in my opinion, much more comfortable and far less crowded and noisy. Also, another requirement of airline travel to a foreign country is that after the flight back home you will be subjected to having to pass through U.S. Customs. In Atlanta chances are you will end up in a gigantic line of tourists and citizens and have to wait for over an hour just to get cleared (hopefully) and sent through to baggage. There you will have to pick up your bags and then redirect them to your final destination. You will also undergo another rigor of modern airline travel which is the Security line and again, at Atlanta, this is huge and snakes around for what seems to be several city blocks. Once again, Houston is much easier in regards to these two aspects and you will be glad you chose Continental. While airline travel to Costa Rica can be rigorous and even downright tedious for some, these tips can help you to make your flight more enjoyable. The Business of Finding you your Lowest Air Fare Just Became a Lot More Crowded

Have you ever tried to check out fares for your travel plans at a website called ITA Software? The answer to that is probably a Yes and No. Even if you don't go to the ITA website directly, this is a company whose technology powers most travel websites. It's been doing well for itself over the last 15 years or so; and now, Google owns it - the Internet giant paid about three-quarters of a billion dollars for it. So what does Google want with it? Well, think about it - Google does search, finding the lowest air fare involve search, it sounds like a pretty well-thought out match. What Google plans is an industry-heaving move. You'll be able to search for the lowest fares around using a great combination of Google's powerful search algorithms, and ITA's travel smarts. Everyone's always said this about Google - when they move into a new industry, the industry closes down, and Google is the only one that's left standing. It happened with the maps business, it practically did with e-mail, Android is taking over the smartphone world, and YouTube marches on practically with no competition. What will happen in the travel industry - to Orbitz, to Expedia and all the other services out there, now that Google has decided to throw its hat in the ring? Enter the way Google does business; this seems like yet another sign that Google is spreading out from merely directing people to other websites for information, to providing that information by itself. Google has two-thirds of the search market in America, and sometimes more - over the rest of the world. Each time they've try to take over a new business, the antitrust regulators and government seem to look more worried. Google Books went and scanned out-of-print books to make available to anyone, and the antitrust people fielded complaints; but when they tried to acquire AdMob for an edge in advertising on cell phones, the FTC put its foot down - until Apple, a competitor, did the same. Everyone's worried that allowing Google to find the lowest air fare for you will be more concentration of power in the same hands. The fare-search business has taken a funny little turn now - Bing Travel has always run on ITA Software's results. So it would seem now, that Bing will actually be displaying Google's results. But why are the airlines worried about it - why are they planning to sue and stop Google from taking over ITA? They worry that if Google is selling tickets on its own, any airline website an get pushed lower down in the search rankings - behind Google's own. It could be a very good thing for travelers though. People have specific requirements for how they want to travel, and up till now, the travel search engines have been pretty inflexible. Google with its famed algorithms, could find you not just your lowest air fare, but the best route, the best airline, the best seat, and all with nothing more than just one question worded anyway you wish. Air Travel’s Getting Expensive – Care to take the Train?

If you fly regularly at all, you know that air travel no longer has anything to do with glamour, comfort or even fun. If you were pressed to describe the experience, you probably use words like over-priced, noisy, crowded and rude. But there seems to be hope at hand; the Transportation Department is on the problem, and has put together a panel of influential people (they've put together a representative group with people to speak for the airlines, the consumers, the visionaries, the policymakers ) to try to find a way to turn things around for air travel. Certainly, they've put together panels before; but this time it looks like they mean business. And their first order of business - making sure that the airlines are forced to hire and maintain a competitive maintenance staff for their aircraft; the kind of impact airliners have on the environment is going to be looked into, and airlines that are forced to resort to every cost-cutting measure to defend their bottom line, are going to get a little help with their finances too. Reporters and journalists were allowed to watch and ask questions of the panel; it provided everyone with a real idea of what the future of air travel was meant to be. The smaller low-cost carriers like Southwest and JetBlue, are seen to be the feeder services that will fill up the planes the big boys fly internationally. If you live in a small city anywhere across the country, you can expect air travel to become more expensive; if you live in a small town, you can expect your regional airport to not have as many services, to have lots of cancellations and delays all the time because they'll only be flying small aircraft that will be shut down by any kind of storm. If you live in a small town, you can expect your area will fall by the wayside as far as air travel opportunities are concerned. International air travel doesn't better; all the big carriers have joined hands, to achieve all kinds of great coordination and efficiency; but since all the big carriers are working together, they'll make sure that the prices don't slide. There's less competition now. The one area where you have good news is when you travel from one major American city to another on the routes served by the low-cost carriers; the prices are rock-bottom now and forever. But while air travel in general is getting more expensive all around, there are other ways of travel opening up - for instance, and the government is really keen on high-speed rail travel; it is handing out billions of dollars to companies like Amtrak, to make it happen. Think maglev and bullet train. As the cost of fuel rises, and they consider putting a major petroleum safety tax on your gas (after the BP oil spill), airlines are just going to stop making money anymore. As much as they raise their fares, they barely break even. It isn't good news either that the European Union and other authorities are planning on slapping a carbon emissions tax too. Sure, going back to rail travel does seem like a step backward. But it's much cleaner, and it's nearly as quick. Cheap one Way Airline Tickets

Everyone enjoys traveling to new destinations. This is why so many people are on the lookout for cheap one way airline tickets these days. Typically these cost you less money than a round-trip ticket, because you are only flying one way. This means less hassle and gas for the airline. Well, typically your best bet when searching for cheap one way airline tickets is the Internet. Online you can take full advantage of so many different deal websites these days that specifically offer discounted air travel and lodging accommodations. The key is never settling on the very first airline ticket deal you encounter. As you may have noticed by now, airline ticket prices have increased quite a bit in the last decade. A lot changed after the 911 event, and many of these changes were not so pleasant for travelers. It does not matter if you are traveling for business or for pleasure. You still have to go through the same bag-checking processes and security measures in order to fly. This is to ensure everyone's safety, but it can be a major hassle. According to airlines, they are losing money, so they had to change the way they do things. This means it can be more difficult to come by round-trip and cheap one way airline tickets. Always check the basic deal sites when on the lookout for cheap one way airline tickets. These are better known as OneTravel.com, Trvelzoo.com, and Expedia.com. A few others you may want to look at are lowestfare.com, sidestep.com, and priceline.com. Your best bet is to check out and compare as many of these sites as you can. To do this, you simply punch in your cheap one way airline ticket destination and date of travel. This way the travel site can calculate what each airline is going to charge. Have a pen and paper handy so you can write down the names of each site and the price they demand for a ticket. There are some tricks to getting the right round-trip or cheap one way airline tickets available. The first thing you should never forget is to shop early on. If you are planning a business rip or vacation to a tropical resort, do not shop online for a cheap one way airline ticket a day or two before you are ready to leave. This is a big mistake, and it will cost you a pretty penny. Try to find your inexpensive airline ticket in advance. This means shopping around a good month before it is time to go. This way you can book the flight you need, but without paying top dollar for that last minute reservation.
